Pioneering Stockport scheme providing training and employment for the hard-to-reach

A Stockport construction company providing valuable training and employment to local people has been visited by local MP, Mark Hunter, to examine the successes of the project and how it can be expanded.

B4Box, located on Stockport’s Lancashire Hill, is a unique social venture specialising in employing and at the same time training people from disadvantaged groups who were previously distant from the labour market.  The company trains students in its college workshop and has completed numerous projects including renovations to put empty homes in Greater Manchester back to use, working in partnership with social landlord Stockport Homes.

Mark met with staff from B4Box and Stockport Homes to discuss achievements in getting people into work and how this could be replicated in new areas, and took the time to meet some of the apprentices currently involved.

Among those, apprentice Dean Martin said: “The training we’ve been given here is really helpful and it’s been life changing. It’s been a big help. I’m hoping to stay on with B4Box after my apprenticeship and get a job in construction.”

Mark Hunter MP said: “It was great to come down and meet Dean and the other apprentices at B4Box today, and understand more about their collaboration with Stockport Homes.  This is a terrific scheme that is giving local young people an opportunity to learn new skills and gain valuable work experience that will enable them to get into employment sooner.

“I will be looking at how we can get more projects like B4Box into our local area to ensure that every young person from Cheadle constituency gets their fair chance to get on in life.”
