Mark Hunter MP joins pupils from Lady Barn House School in campaigning to Save the Rainforest

Local MP for Cheadle constituency, Mark Hunter, has celebrated with pupils from Lady Barn House School in Cheadle, after student Amelie won a prize in World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Sky Rainforest Rescue’s Forest illustration competition.

Amelie, joined by fellow pupil Charlotte, were welcomed to a special forest-themed reception held in parliament to celebrate her achievement, where they also met Steve Backshall, adventurer, environmentalist and author.

WWF held the competition to help raise awareness of their campaign asking UK businesses to pledge to buy timber and wood based products from sustainable sources by 2020.

Commenting, Mark said:

“It was great to meet Amelie and Charlotte from Lady Barn House School in Parliament today, and to see Amelie’s great poster design.  Rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate so I was pleased to join them, and WWF, in calling for UK businesses to only buy timber from reputable loggers who work sustainably.

“Rainforests provide a home to more than half of the world’s animals, plants and insects, they create livelihoods for millions of people around the globe and they play an important role in regulating the Earth’s climate.  By being conscientious consumers, people in the UK can help preserve this precious resource.“
