Last Sunday 24th June 2012 the Olympic Torch came to town and travelled down the A6 and into Stockport. Despite the bad weather, hundreds gathered along the road side and on the steps of the Town Hall to watch the procession. Cheadle MP Mark Hunter joined with the Town's other MPs, Stockport Council Leader Sue Derbyshire and other local figures in Stockport centre to celebrate the iconic Torch's journey through the town.

The Torch is travelling through 1,018 villages, towns and cities on the route meaning the Olympic Flame will be within an hour's journey time of 95% of the population, ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games which will begin with the opening ceremony on 27th July.

In November last year, Mark attended a special event in the House of Commons to welcome the announcement that Stockport would be one of the destinations of the Olympic Torch (see photograph).

Commenting after the event, Mark said:

"Although the Olympic Games are mainly taking place in London, I was pleased to see the Olympic Torch travel through Stockport and so our town could play its own part in the 2012 Olympics.

"I know many people are excited by the prospect of the Games and the Olympic Torch passing through our area brings them even closer to home. It was great to see so many local people turn out to greet the torch despite the poor weather conditions.

"I hope everybody enjoys the Games and the best of luck to the participants, especially our local athletes!"
