Mark is opposing the current development proposals

Mark Hunter, MP for the Woodford area, has vowed to oppose plans for almost 1000 new homes on the former BAE Systems Chester Road site in the village. BAE sold the historic site last year to the heir of the JCB family fortune and now a specialist development company Harrow Estates - part of the Redrow Empire - are to put forward plans for 950 residential properties plus a new school and a pub.

Mr Hunter had previously made clear, throughout a long period of public consultation, that he would not support any development which was detrimental to the unique characteristics of Woodford village. Following a recent public event at which Stockport Council and Harrow Estates revealed their plans, Mr Hunter has spoken out about the size and scale of the proposed development which he considers to be "inappropriate".

Commenting, Mr Hunter said:

"I am pleased that SMBC have now agreed to put back publication of their Supplementary Planning Document which was due to be agreed at the Council Executive meeting this week.

"This document sets out clearly the Council's policy guidelines for the area and now that publication has been delayed until September it gives the Council and the Company the chance to think again - and for residents to make thier voice heard.

"However, I have already made my position clear to the developer and SMBC - I will not support the current proposals which would effectively triple in size the existing Woodford community and have a severe impact on local roads.

"I will continue to work with all those who which to see development options which are acceptable to the local community and will not damage the unique village setting Woodford currently enjoys."

Mr Hunter will meet with local councillors and representatives of the Woodford Community Council next Friday, 29th June, to discuss the next steps.
